Dear Member,
As you may have already seen from the RFC calendar on our website, the 2017 RFC Christmas Dinner is due to be held on Monday 18th December. The club will of course be closed as a result.
The dinner will be held at Zero Degrees in central Reading, with tables reserved for 7.30pm.
The address of the restaurant is 9 Bridge Street, RG1 2LR and it is located within 5 minutes walk from The Oracle Riverside and Broad Street Mall car parks. For public transport, it is less than a 10 minute walk from Reading train station, plus numerous local buses run from nearby St Mary’s Butts. The phone number is 0118 959 7959.
If you would like to attend, you will need to:
You can either pay this online to RFC (payment details can be found on our website), or in cash directly to me (I’m normally at the club on both Mondays and Wednesdays).
Please see below for further details on the menus and any special dietary requirements, it is important you fully read the info, it will not take a lot of time.
In summary, you can choose from either the Xmas menu (3 courses for £22.95) or from the standard set menu (2 courses for £17.95 or 3 courses for £21.95). Your £20 deposit will be deducted from the final bill on the evening, but please bear in mind there will be a 10% service charge applied to our bill.
You may choose from the Xmas menu or the standard menus.
For those with any special dietary requirements, please ask Phil who can provide you with the Xmas and pizza allergens menus. Please also see my note below when pre-ordering food if you have any allergy. I am told by Zero Degrees that all pizzas can be made with a gluten-free base, plus most dishes can either be customised to suit, or they can even offer dishes off menu.
Please do feel free to check before ordering directly with Zero Degrees (phone number above or email) if you have any questions, however, the allergen menus should clearly show what dishes will be suitable for you. This will be quicker than asking me, as I will likely need to double check with Zero Degrees anyway.
Please note there will be a glass of free champagne on arrival for our group. RFC will kindly be making a contribution to the event, similar to the past. As some of you will already know, Zero Degrees is a micro-brewery, which no doubt will be exciting for any of you beer lovers!
A separate Juniors Xmas event is to be held, likely in early December, with details to be announced once available.
I look forward to seeing you there!
Phil
The sports hall is unavailable for hire on Monday 20th November, so there will be no fencing.
The BB&O County Championships for age groups (U12/U14/U16/U18) and seniors at epee and sabre take place on Sunday 5th November at Langley Grammar School in Langley. Closing date for entries is 1st November, with entries needing to be made via the BF online portal.
Well done Gabi Smyth who won the Bedford open today!
We have sent a few email notices but in case you’re not already aware there is a junior team competition taking place this Sunday, 8 October, in Swindon. Full details can be found here.
There are teams for Under 14 and Under 18 épée. If you’re interested in attending please email us ASAP.
Also, Southern are looking for referees for the event. They will pay per diem / a bottle of wine so if you are able to referee please contact them via the link above.
A reminder for those of you who have not noticed a couple of dates in the calendar when the club will be closed as the sports hall is unavailable. The dates are Monday 9th October and Monday 20th November.
Well done Alain Barbasiewicz who wins the prize in this months club competition. Full results can be found here.
A club match will be held at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) on Wednesday 29th November. The relay team format will be used. This match is only open to intermediate fencers, i.e. less than 2 years experience. Fencing will start at 7.45pm. If you are interested, please let us know by emailing the club or speaking to Phil by no later than Tuesday 22nd November. IMPORTANT NOTE - the match will of course be held on a military base. For security purposes, you will need to bring photo ID with you, plus (if you are driving there) give me a note of your car registration number, plus the make, model and colour details. I will need to give a full names and car registration details for those coming to RMAS no later than a week in advance of the match, so if you do not do this in time you cannot fence. You will need to enter the base via the Staff College Gate (GU15 4NP), which is on the A30 London Road, opposite a Premier Inn. Phil can provide you with a map showing directions from the entrance to where we will be parking, in the Old College HQ car park, from where Officer Cadets will meet you and escort us to the nearby venue.
