Steve wins the Southern

Well done Steve Bateman who is the new Southern Region epee champion. Also competing were Phil Barbasiewicz and Dave Hillier who reached the quarter finals and William Hoodless who went out in the last 32.


Club Kit

RFC’s kit is ready to order via the British Fencing Club Portal.

The portal means that you can order and pay online for your order whenever you want – with the added benefit that you don’t have to pester me. Please be aware that the supplier needs to order our in copies of our Club logo so, to begin, the first orders may take 2-3 weeks longer than usual but after that they will have a regular turnaround of less than 2 weeks.

Various Reminders

A few reminders and news items to bring to your attention as follows:

  1. RFC’s 70th birthday lunch takes place this Sunday (29th April) at Thames Lido in Reading, near the train station. Full details have previously been announced. There is still space if anyone is interested to attend. Please just let us know and also pay a £20 deposit. The club is putting money towards the bar which we are hoping will cover the drinks and mean you need pay no more than the £20.

  2. The next round of matches with the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) will be held in the coming months and are open to any fencer with up to 4 years of experience. An away match will be held on Wednesday 20th June and a home match will take place on Wednesday 11th July. If you are interested, please either speak to Phil on a club night or email us.

  3. The Southern Region Senior Epee & Sabre Championships are taking place on Sunday 20th May in Newbury. Entry details can be found on the SR website.

  4. Our AGM will be held on Wednesday 18th July. As in the past, we will aim to start the AGM promptly at 1930 and finished as soon as we can. If anyone is interested in being elected to a position in the committee, then please remember to submit a Nomination Form beforehand.


Southern region development day

This is for all those who fence Epee. Following his very successful day with us last year, we are very lucky to have David Keszler to lead the coaching once more.

Cost: £30 for Southern Region Fencers

Do you need a first aid course? We are hosting this official course. The cost will be £65 per person.

Armoury workshops – Andrew Goodier will be there to introduce armoury to anyone wanting to bring weapons along to work on, or just sit in and pick up tips. Also, if you have any armourers that would like to advance their knowledge, he will happily work with them on all types of equipment including club boxes etc

Cost: £10 for the Southern Region

Refereeing - Penthathlon GB

Pentathlon GB are looking for volunteers to help referee at the National Tetrathlon Championships, being held on Saturday 21 April at the University of Bath.

It includes a full day’s épée fencing for the various age groups. The competition also includes swimming, shooting and running so it will be a busy day.

RFC Match with Sandhurst (RMAS)

RFC hosted the latest set of matches with the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) on Wednesday 14th March.

The match was open to intermediate-level fencers, with 2 of the RFC fencers coming from the current beginners course. The RFC teams were made up of:

RFC ‘A’ – Munawar Karim, Lewie Jackson and Rathish Punneli. RFC ‘B’ – Beau Rahim, Josh Jackson and Max Dutton. RFC ‘C’ – Oleg Fylpenko, Len Quinn and Simon Readman.

In the main team competition between the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams of both sides, the RFC teams won one out of the four matches, with RMAS ‘A’ remaining unbeaten and claiming first place. RFC ‘A’ secured second place on points difference with RMAS ‘B’. The match results were:

RFC ‘A’ beat RMAS ‘B’ 45-28, but narrowly lost to RMAS ‘A’ in a tight fight 45-40. RFC ‘B’ lost to RMAS ‘A’ 45-32 and to RMAS ‘B’ 45-39.

The ‘C’ teams consisted of reserve fencers, with RMAS ‘C’ fielding two teams for this. RFC ‘C’ won both their matches, 45-38 and then 45-23.

Another round of matches will be arranged (dated TBA very soon), with the next match due to be hosted by RMAS.


RFC fencers claim medals at 2018 Southern Region Epee & Sabre Championships

The 2018 Southern Region Age Group Epee & Sabre Championships were held in Swindon last weekend, with several RFC fencers in action. There were places in the British Youth Championships on offer for those finishing in the top four.

RFC fencers had some great success across several categories, with the following results:
