Reading Fencing clubs is always active with competitions against ourseleves and other clubs in the region.
RFC fencers travelled to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) yesterday, for a friendly club match hosted by RMAS, in their iconic Old College building. This match was arranged for intermediate level fencers, four of whom had only completed a recent beginner course, with the RFC teams made up of: RFC ‘A’ – Lewie Jackson, Andy Smith and Beau Rahim. RFC ‘B’ – Rathish Punneli, Munawar Karim and Stanley Louw. Overall, the RFC teams won one out of the four matches, but gained valuable experience from the fencing. RFC ‘A’ beat RMAS ‘B’ 45-40, but lost to RMAS ‘A’ 45-23. RFC ‘B’ lost to RMAS ‘A’ 45-18 and to RMAS ‘B’ 45-37. A return match will be hosted by RFC in due course, with additional matches against other local clubs also planned for 2018.

Dear Member, As you may have already seen from the RFC calendar on our website, the 2017 RFC Christmas Dinner is due to be held on Monday 18th December. The club will of course be closed as a result. The dinner will be held at Zero Degrees in central Reading, with tables reserved for 7.30pm. The address of the restaurant is 9 Bridge Street, RG1 2LR and it is located within 5 minutes walk from The Oracle Riverside and Broad Street Mall car parks. For public transport, it is less than a 10 minute walk from Reading train station, plus numerous local buses run from nearby St Mary’s Butts. The phone number is 0118 959 7959. If you would like to attend, you will need to: 1. Pay a £20 deposit to confirm your place. This is not refundable in the event of a late cancellation, meaning less than 1 week in advance of dinner, i.e. after Monday 11th December. If you cancel by COB on 4th December, we can refund your deposit. You can either pay this online to RFC (payment details can be found on our website), or in cash directly to me (I’m normally at the club on both Mondays and Wednesdays). 2. Confirm your menu choices to me, no later than by COB on Monday 4th December. You can do this by either emailing the club (email@example.com) or emailing me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please see below for further details on the menus and any special dietary requirements, it is important you fully read the info, it will not take a lot of time. In summary, you can choose from either the Xmas menu (3 courses for £22.95) or from the standard set menu (2 courses for £17.95 or 3 courses for £21.95). Your £20 deposit will be deducted from the final bill on the evening, but please bear in mind there will be a 10% service charge applied to our bill. The Xmas menu can be found at http://www.zerodegrees.co.uk/menu/christmas-2017, plus the standard menus at www.zerodegrees.co.uk/menu. For those with any special dietary requirements, please ask Phil who can provide you with the Xmas and pizza allergens menus. Please also see my note below when pre-ordering food if you have any allergy. I am told by Zero Degrees that all pizzas can be made with a gluten-free base, plus most dishes can either be customised to suit, or they can even offer dishes off menu. Please do feel free to check before ordering directly with Zero Degrees (phone number above or email at email@example.com) if you have any questions, however, the allergen menus should clearly show what dishes will be suitable for you. This will be quicker than asking me, as I will likely need to double check with Zero Degrees anyway. Please note there will be a glass of free champagne on arrival for our group. RFC will kindly be making a contribution to the event, similar to the past. As some of you will already know, Zero Degrees is a micro-brewery, which no doubt will be exciting for any of you beer lovers! A separate Juniors Xmas event is to be held, likely in early December, with details to be announced once available. I look forward to seeing you there! Phil
