Reading Fencing clubs is always active with competitions against ourseleves and other clubs in the region.
The Department of Education has announced that fencing, among other Olympic sports, are to be removed from the GCSE curriculum.
It is felt that this could be damaging to the sport, so Paul Sibert has started an online petition to attempt to get this reviewed. You can sign the petition here.
Becky Mayle won the Sussex open and Verity Hillier won the Bedford open this weekend! Also Calum came third at Bedford.
There was a good turn out of Reading fencers at the London International epee. Ladies: Jax Bowers L16, Verity Hillier and Odette Hornby L32, Rebecca Mayle and Sam Hughes L64. Mens: Ben Schneider and Edgar Hornby L16, Dave Hillier L32, Calum Maynard, Nick Dobbie, Felix Stansfield and Rob Maclennan L64 and Peter Robinson L128. The full results can be found here
A team of fencers – Jeff Rosenbaum, Nigel Snell and Phil Barbasiewicz – travelled down to Egham Fencing Club for the first match of the season and made it a winning start, with the final score at the end of the evening being 13-9.
Our September beginner course started on Monday 7 September, with 15 students in all. We are already taking bookings for our next course starting in January so check out our Join Us / Courses section to find out more.
As briefly mentioned in our recent AGM, the first club match of the new season has been arranged with Egham FC. This will take be an away match, set to take place on Friday 25 September, with fencing due to start by 8pm.
The format for the match is expected to be run as a poule unique. I hope you will be interested in taking part. This is open to all fencers, from the novice to veteran! Please let me know if you would like to fence, bearing in mind I will not be at the club until September, although you can always email me through the club on this email address.
